What is a Business Plan?  A business plan is a road map that tells the reader about your business.  It usually has two components.  It can be a plan that tells a lender or investor about your business and secondly, how you plan to become successful. A business plan begins with an idea and ends when either you raise capital, either publicly or privately; or it may just become a plan to achieve profitability. However, you must remember that the one component that is not quantifiable is you, success depends largely upon you, "the man actually in the arena".  And yes, luck is an unquantifiable element as well.

As for what a plan contains, it must be easy to understand and yet specific, with measurable objectives.  It also must define your goals and provide enough data to justify your sales projections.  A complete plan offers the reader an insight into your objectives, while demonstrating that you understand your competition, the market demographics and how you intend to capture those markets.  It should also define your market and sales strategies.  Exit strategies are sometimes helpful in certain circumstances.  A business plan should be considered useful for more than just raising capital for your business it can be a road map to your success.

The essential or key points of a business plan include the following:

1.     Company Summary

2.     The Markets

3.     Marketing Strategies

3.    Sales Forecasts or Projections

4.    Cash Flow and Balance Sheet Projections

5.    Break Even Analysis
